Why does a battery weaken when it gets cold?
The chemical reaction inside the battery slows in cold weather, while a cold engine needs more energy to crank. A battery that works in summer may not crank in January.
Is it bad to keep cranking the engine repeatedly?
Yes. Each long crank drains the battery further. Maximum two 3-second cranks, then call.
